Filmmaker Mary Lance started New Deal Films, Inc. in 1980 during the production of her first documentary, ARTISTS AT WORK: A Film on the New Deal Art Projects.
Since then, we’ve produced the independent documentaries DIEGO RIVERA: I PAINT WHAT I SEE, AGNES MARTIN: WITH MY BACK TO THE WORLD, and BLUE ALCHEMY: STORIES OF INDIGO, while also working on archival film research, museum media, and freelance television producing.
Our programs have been broadcast in the U.S. and abroad and have won numerous awards at international film festivals. Our grant-funded work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and foundations.
We like to distribute our own work and have screened at major institutions and small, local venues. Screenings can be booked (send us an email) and DVDs purchased on this website. Some of our titles can be streamed on Vimeo.com (home viewing) and kanopystreaming.com (institutional use).
